Remembering 2017: Favorite Moments Of The Year

All the moments where I lived my best life, made the most out of every opportunity and never once questioned how blessed I am.

Can you believe it's the last day of the year already? It seems like just yesterday that it was December 2016 and I was stressed to my ears about 2017 — and starting a new job. Now I'm grateful to be sitting back and reflecting on all the things that made this year special.

FAVORITE OVERALL MOMENT

Saying “yes” to so many things! From submitting scripts to festivals to writing/directing a short, going to Create + Cultivate, not being ashamed to take photos of myself for my blog with a tripod, and the list goes on. This year might have been terrible for America, but I’d say it was pretty awesome for me in terms of growth.

FAVORITE CAREER MOMENT

Getting to interview so many celebrities and amazing “everyday heroes” (as we call them at Good Housekeeping). My favorite interview/story will be published in March (on newsstands in February!) and I couldn’t be more excited.

Favorite Learning Moment

This year was no different than the others: I spent the majority of my money on learning experiences versus anything else. While I loved attending all the networking/blogging conferences and workshops I could find, my favorite “class” had to be the Masterclass taught by Shonda Rhimes. Not only did I learn so much about Grey’s Anatomy and Shonda herself, but I also learned so much about myself as a writer.

FAVORITE STORY I WROTE

This One 'Black Panther' Trailer Tweet Explains Why This Movie Matters For Black Women for Bustle

FAVORITE MOVIE I SAW:

Its a tie between Everything, Everything and Girls Trip. Both created by women of color, starring women of color, showing a side of women of color on screen that’s typically missing from the narrative.

FAVORITE SHOWS I WATCHED:

13 Reasons Why, Queen Sugar, Marvel's Runaways and Dear White People,

FAVORITE BOOK I READ:

The Mothers, by Brit Bennett. In less than six hours (a new personal record! ) I finished this book. It’s the perfect combination of realism, suspense, and drama.

FAVORITE SONG:

According to my Spotify account, I listened to over 47,000 minutes of music. And that doesn’t even include what I’ve listened to since the streaming app calculated this number for me. My most listened to song of the year? “Personal” by Kehlani — i.e. my theme song for 2017 AND 2018.

FAVORITE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE:

Alexis left the country for the first time this year and it was everything! (Sorry I don't know why I referred to myself in third person!) Honestly, I never thought going on a cruise could be so fun. But I’m happy that I finally got to cross another item off my bucket list. And the *authentic* Mexican tacos I had were everything.

FAVORITE Wellness Moment

In a quirky act of self-care, I leaped at the opportunity to take a Beyoncé yoga class. Ohm-ing in a room surrounded by bendy people isn’t normally my thing, but the blaring of “Formation” and “711” had me feeling the practice.

Favorite Random Moment

Shamelessly ordering Popeyes chicken for delivery. Remember this is a judge free zone.

FAVORITE QUOTE:

"I'm looking forward to the day that I greet fear wholeheartedly, nose to nose, and tell it you have met your goddamn match” - Solange
