The 10 Commandments of 2018 Every Woman Should Follow

Happy New Year! It's officially 2018 and I couldn't be more excited about what's to come this year for me and for you!

To kick off the season of new beginnings below are goals for the year in the form of commandments that I hope every woman strives to live by for all 365 days of the year. Sure some days will be harder than others, but I'm confident that we all can do it.

Now I know what you're thinking: New Years resolutions/goal lists/etc. are so cliche. But regardless of how played out the idea of making resolutions is, doing it works. There's nothing wrong with women feeling like they need a special day on the calendar to make a fresh start or to try something new. Get things done by any means neccessary right? And on that note...

This year is all about owning whatever it is you say, do, try, fail at and excel it. No more playing small. No more apologizing. No more holding back. No more second-guessing. Kick imposter syndrome to the curb and embrace yourself. Figure out who you are and what you want, and don't let anyone or anything sway you to the other side (i.e. the ocean of self-doubt).

Allow me to introduce you to the #cutoff. Look you should already know this, but let me be the one to remind you: you are entirely too talented, too ambitious and too nice to be surrounded by people or in situations that make you feel unhappy about yourself or successes. And just because everyone else seems to be in a funk every time you log onto social media doesn't mean you must join the cyber pity-party. Posting an inspirational career quote, or a funny meme during harsh political times ain't never hurt nobody.

Ask yourself: Do you not take a picture of your food (or in front of a cool art wall) in public because you don't want to (which is totally okay, BTW) or because people might judge? If you're like me, it's the latter. But this year there's no more being afraid to take a photo when creativity strikes. Particularly for two reasons: 1) we're millennials and Instagramming our food/face/quote on the street is what we do and 2) you won't ever see the people who notice again anyways.

4. THOU SHALL mind thy own business

Being too concerned about someone else's blessings is the perfect way to end up with none of your own. Now that's not to say you shouldn't celebrate your friends and family's happy moments, or to be there when they really need you. I'm talking about the inserting yourself into their situations or shortcomings and then beating yourself up for not excelling at their pace and forgetting that you've got your own life to live.

5. THOU SHALL find thyself's worth, then add tax

Oh yeah, I'm talking about those relationships/situationships that have been on life support for the last however-something-long. It's officially time to dead them. If you're no longer feeling fulfilled with your current partner, let them go sis. And if you find yourself being pursued by someone knew who isn't measuring up to your standards (that are totally reasonable, BTW), let them go sis.

Wanting to start a blog? Do it! Itching to apply for a new job? Toss that resume out there! Have the urge to download a dating app? Go for it! Longing for a promotion or a raise at work? Ask for it! Quit being a spectator in your own life and just put yourself out there.

7.  THOU SHALL be kind

I know you've heard this a million times, and now for the millionth and one time: be kind to everyone you meet, for everyone is fighting a hard battle. You're not the only one with problems. Harsh, but true. And while you're free to wallow in them, cry, and want to be unbothered every once in a while, don't take your sadness/anger out on everyone. On a good day, but especially on your worst one, a smile to a stranger may go along way.

8.  THOU shall dance it out

Who doesn't love to dance in the mirror? If you ask me it's the perfect way to let loose and not take yourself too seriously. Adulting is one of the most stressful things ever and every now and again (or every morning if you're me) you deserve to blast Beyonce/Cardi B/Whitney Houston, let your hair down and chill TF out guilt-free.

9. THOU SHALL have new experiences

I'm all about trying new things, whether that's a new vacation destination, a new career path or even a new type of taco. This year you should be too. Change can be hard at first, but nothing great ever came from comfort zones. See some world, switch up your morning routine and venture out into the unknown. You may just find something (or someone!) new to love.

No more sitting back and watching other people smile, have fun and share memories. If you're wanting to Instagram something (and you know live by #3) you kind of have to get out there and live. In the words of one of my favorite authors: Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!

What are some of your goals for the year? Let me hear in the comments!
