Let me just start off by saying that Gabrielle Union has always been my best friend in my head. Ever since I saw her She's All That and Bring it On, I've been in awe of her down-to-earth personality, ageless skin, and undeniable talent. So when I learned that she was releasing a book I literally jumped up from my desk.
In a moving collection of thought-provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, my BFF (has a great ring to it doesn't it?) shares stories about her childhood, power, race, her rise to fame and more. I loved it so much that I actually read it in about a day and a half. Additionally, I'm not ashamed to say that I own about five copies...well, four now. I gifted one to my mother.
It's just such an amazing read that gives great insight into the mind of one of Hollywood's most accomplished actresses/entrepreneurs/all-around badasses. You'll literally find yourself screaming "yes, girl," and "me too" with every page turn. And if you still need more convincing, here are four reasons this should be on your bookish wish list.
1. It's Super Relatable
Who hasn't stalked their ex? Been afraid to bye feminine products in the drugstore? Or been the "only" in a room at some point or another? The answer to all of those questions is no one, not even Gabrielle. Every chapter reveals a secret struggle or situation she's encountered that everyone has faced (or will face) at some point or another. I mean, I don't know about you, but I love celebs who's stories I can connect with. And those who've never worked a retail job or lost themselves behind a childhood crush aren't for me.
2. Gabrielle Couldn't Be More Transparent If She Tried
When you're in the public eye and even when you're not, it takes a tremendous amount of strength to talk so openly about things like divorce, infertility, and rape. But Gabrielle does it with such grace that you can't help but be inspired. Favorite chapter: "Famous Vaginas Get Itchy Too." Read it and you'll understand why.
3. You'll Learn Something New In Each Chapter
Piggybacking off reason #2, because of her transparency it's impossible not to learn something new about Gabrielle. Before this book, I never would've thought that her first choice of a cheerleading movie role wasn't Bring It On, but instead a cheerleading movie that totally bombed at the box office. I'll let you read it to figure out what it is. Or what a Prince party is...was (sad face) is like.
4. Her Prescription for a breakup Involves 'Waiting To Exhale'
That reason alone makes me want to stand up and shout! Anyone who's seen this movie (and if you haven't I'm side-eyeing you) understands why. Of course her prescription in the book involves other elements, but this is the most important. And if my ex-boyfriend is reading this right now he's definitely rolling his eyes grumbling about how I watch this movie entirely TOO MUCH. But hey, Gabrielle told me to!
