2018 is going to be a fantastic year — well, at least in the film department!
Last year I saw 31 movies in theaters and this year I plan to see even more. There's no shortage of great films written, directed by, and/or starring amazing women premiering in the coming months.
So if you're tired of random Netflix movies, check out one of these fun, adventerous, maybe even (hopefully) Oscar-winning movies in 2018. (That last part was aimed at A Wrinkle in Time, btw.)
1. Proud Mary
Starring one of the most versatile actresses around, also known as Taraji P. Henson, Proud Mary is an action-packed story following a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston. But when a professional hit goes bad her life is completely turned upside down.
To be released: January 12
2. Black Panther
When the Black Panther trailer was released, Twitter was set ablaze with fans — new and old — posting happy GIFs and memes, making theater carpooling arrangements, and planning out their release day outfits. In this highly-anticipated film T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther takes his place as the newly crowned king of Wakanda and goes toe-to-toe with his rival Erik Killmonger, as he attempts to dethrone Black Panther.
To be released: February 16
3. Fifty Shades Freed
Oh, c'mon this is everyone's guilty pleasure. There's something exhilaratingly cheesy about Ana and Christian's relationship. And I for one am super excited that they're finally getting married in Fifty Shades Freed. These two lustful love birds think they've left behind all the danger and sketchy characters thrust upon them in the previous Fifty Shades Darker. Unfortunately, that couldn't be further from the truth. Just as they officially become Mr. and Mrs. Grey, new threats, well...threaten to ruin their happily ever after.
To be released: February 9
4. A Wrinkle In Time
Ah! Book lovers rejoice! Everyone's favorite childhood story is headed to the big screen. Brought to life by visionary director Ava DuVernay, Madeline L'Engle's 1960's classic A Wrinkle in Time is an epic fantasy adventure that will bring out the warrior in us all. In the film, teenage misfit Meg must overcome self-doubt to fight the darkness and rescue her missing scientist father.
To be released: March 9
5. Avengers: Infinity War
Can you tell that I love action/comic book films? If not, here's a secret: I DO. I'm the girl who can watch an Avengers movie over and over and over again and still laugh at the same jokes. The first two continue to have me rolling every time I see them, so it's no surprise I'm pumped for the third installment. And this time around everyone's favorite team of superheroes includes Black Panther. In Infinity War, Black Panther, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the gang unite to battle stop the evil Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones and inflicting his twisted will on the world.
To be released: May 4
6. Oceans Eight
Do women get anymore badass than this? Starring an ensemble cast of Hollywood's finest including Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathawy, Cate Blanchett and Rihanna, Ocean's 8 follows criminal mastermind Debbie Ocean (Bullock) and seven other female thieves who plan to pull off a heist involving a $150 million necklace at New York's annual Met Gala.
To be released: June 8
7. The Hate U Give
Last, but certainly not least, there's the super-timely Black Lives Matter-inspired film based off of Angie Thomas' best-selling novel. The Hate U Give is about 16-year-old Starr Carter, a lively teen who’s from a low-income neighborhood but attends an elite prep school in the suburbs. Unfortunately, she becomes torn between two worlds when she witnesses her unarmed childhood friend shot to death by a police officer. No trailer has been released for the film yet, so for now anxious fans like myself are stuck pouring over behind the scenes Instagram photos. And according to them, this will be a film you won't want to miss.
To be released: TBD
